How to Split a Check When Dining Out
While dining out with friends or colleagues can be fun, trying to figure out how to split the check without having everybody leave with a headache… is not so fun. Moreover, the majority of the time, the headache and stress that trying to figure this out causes, isn’t even worth it! Well, here are some quick and easy tips to better deal with the dreaded issue of splitting the check. Hopefully these tips will make the situation more tolerable for you and everybody else, especially if you are not the only one keeping them in mind!
If you are really tight on money - especially if you are young - it is okay to scrutinize the bill to figure out exactly what you owe. If you are doing this, though, be sure to include your meal and beverages, as well as your portion of the tax and tip. Other people at the table may feel that it is easier to just split the check evenly, but if you really don’t feel comfortable doing this, then stand your ground. Afterall, it may actually be really unfair to split the bill evenly!
Whatever you do, and no matter how tight you are on money, do not just throw in for the cost of your meal and drink and call it a day while hoping nobody catches on. They will catch on, because there is always somebody at the table who tries it! You must include your portion of the tax and tip. Keep in mind that tax and tip add up to 28% of the cost of the meal, which is not a small amount.
Often times, people do not have cash on them, which makes it much harder to split the bill. This leaves the server to have to run everybody’s cards with various amounts on them. Keeping this in mind, try to leave a nice tip for your server.
Lastly, when agreeing to go out for a meal with your friends or colleagues, keep in mind that splitting the check evenly is always a possibility, even if you’d rather not do this. Remembering this, try not to order the most expensive item on the menu, knowing that somebody else will probably end up paying for some of it when all is said and done. Hopefully, other people will keep this in mind as well, so that you do not get stuck paying for a part of their meal either. Don’t forget, you agreed to dine out with everybody, so be prepared for anything!
